Acupuncture Offers New Hope for Fibromyalgia

If you have fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), you simply ache all over. It is a musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder for which there is no known cause or cure. Fibromyalgia involves pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons; anywhere there are soft tissues in the body.

More women than men suffer from this syndrome, with as many as eight million people throughout the U.S. Most of the time its symptoms are treated with medication, but there is exciting new research that acupuncture may help fibromyalgia patients as well.

In addition to feel like you have a severe case of the flu all the time, you feel tired and totally devoid of energy. For this reason doctors believe fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome may be closely related. Besides muscle pain, fibromyalgia patients may have sleep disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, frequent headaches, TMJ (jaw-related face and head pain) and premenstrual symptoms.
